Dr. Kyriacos Georghiou was born in Famagusta, Cyprus (1950). He holds a BSc (1973) in Natural Sciences and Geography and a PhD (1981) in Biology, National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (NKUA), where he has been working until Sept. 2017 for more than 42 years, as Professor of Plant Physiology.

He served as:

  • Head of the Department of Botany (2013-15).
  • Deputy Chairman of the Faculty of Biology (2009-15).
  • Chairman of the Department of Biology (2015-17).

His doctoral dissertation dealt with Seed Biology and since then he has been involved with numerous research projects on Plant Physiology and Conservation Biology. He has been actively involved in several projects on the establishment of the NATURA 2000 Network in Greece and Cyprus. In particular, he was the scientific responsible in the LIFE Projects:

  • Inventory, Identification, Evaluation and Mapping of the Habitat Types and Flora and Fauna Species in Greece (Directive 92/43/EEC) (1994 – 96).
  • Special areas of conservation (Directive 92/43/EEC) in Cyprus (1999 – 2002).
  • Conservation management in NATURA 2000 sites of Cyprus (2004 – 08).
  • Conservation of priority forests and forest openings in “Ethnikos Drymos Oitis” and “Oros Kallidromo” of Sterea Ellada (FOROPENFORESTS). (2012 – 2017)

Currently, he is participating in the LIFE IP PHYSIS project in Cyprus (2019-2029) as Co-Chair of the Scientific Committee of the project and Scientific Responsible of the NKUA team.

He has published more than 50 original articles in international scientific journals & books with more than 5,000 citations on his work (‪Kyriacos Georghiou – ‪Google Scholar). He was honored by:

  • The Hellenic Botanical Society and The Cyprus Biological Society for his long term activities in Botanical and Biological Research.
  • The Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment for his contribution to the organization and establishment of the NATURA 2000 network in Cyprus.
