History
As early as the 1960s, there were only three psychologists in Cyprus who came from other professions and had received additional training in psychology.
The profession of psychologist in Cyprus was almost unknown until the 1970s. The history of Cyprus, as well as that of psychology in Cyprus, were marked by the 1974. Turkish invasion and subsequent occupation of approximately one third of the island.
Feelings of insecurity and the loss of lives no doubt led to an increased interest in the field of psychology in the years following and to an increase in the number of people who became interested in the study of psychology.
Individuals interested in studying beyond the high-school level had to go abroad. Consequently, in the 1970s and 1980s there were many individuals studying psychology broad in countries such as Greece, England, the USA, the USSR, and others. Most of these individuals received a Bachelors degree, or the
equivalent, and returned to Cyprus to practice.
The rapid increase in the number of psychologists, the need to raise awareness of the profession, and the necessity to create job positions led the local Psychologists to organize themselves into a group.
On March 25, 1980, the Cyprus Psychologists Association (CPA) was founded and till now constitutes the professional body of Cypriot psychologists.
University of Cyprus established the first post-secondary education program in Psychology.
In 1995, the Law on the Registration of Professional Psychologists was passed.
Cyprus Psychologists Association
In 1980, there were only 21 individuals with a degree in Psychology. Nowadays, the number of members has multiplied and keeps growing.
In its 30 years of existence, the Cyprus Psychologists Association has developed a multifaceted range of activities and has succeeded in making the Profession of Psychologist and the Science of Psychology known in Cyprus, creating job positions and ensuring that the psychological perspective is heard and taken into account on issues concerning Cypriot society.
The enactment of the Law on the Registration of Professional Psychologists is the result of efforts that began almost immediately after the Association was founded.
