Helpful InformationCyprus Learning Legacy

Cyprus Classrooms Today
Cyprus has a strong and structured education system. Children start with pre-primary school at the age of four years and eight months. Education becomes compulsory from primary school until the age of fifteen.
Primary school lasts six years. Students learn Greek, mathematics, science, and basic skills. Most children attend public schools. Secondary education has two stages. Students first attend lower secondary school for three years. After that, they move to upper secondary school. At this stage, they can choose between general education and technical or vocational education.
Public universities offer strong academic programs. Private universities also attract many local and international students. English plays an important role in higher education, which makes Cyprus appealing to students from abroad. Local students receive annual state sponsorship for pursuing their studies.
Minds That Shaped Cyprus
Zeno of Citium

Zeno was born in Citium, today’s Larnaca, around 334 BC. He founded the school of Stoicism in Athens. He taught people how to live with reason and self-control. He believed that virtue matters more than wealth or status. He encouraged people to accept what they cannot control and focus on their actions.

His ideas shaped Roman thinkers and later European philosophy. Many people still read Stoic philosophy today. Zeno started that movement. Not bad for someone from a small island.

Neophytos Vamvas

Neophytos Vamvas was born in Cyprus in 1770. He became an important scholar and teacher during the Greek Enlightenment. He worked hard to reform education and promote modern thinking.

He also translated the Bible into modern Greek. This decision caused strong reactions at the time. Still, he believed education should be clear and accessible to everyone. He helped connect Cyprus to the wider intellectual world of Europe.

Archbishop Kyprianos

He strongly supported education during Ottoman rule. He helped found and support Greek schools on the island. He believed education would protect identity and culture. He improved school organization and encouraged higher learning. Many students later studied in Europe because of his support.

In 1821 Ottoman authorities executed him during the Greek War of Independence.
