Education
The Frontiers in Education (FIE) Conference 2026 took place in Paphos, Cyprus, from October 11 to 14, 2026, bringing together 426 academics, researchers, students, and education professionals from 51 countries at the Coral Beach Hotel & Resort. Held under the theme Engineering and Computing Education in the Large Language Model Era, the conference provided an international meeting point for professionals working across engineering and computing education.
Prof. George Papadopoulos and Prof. Claudio Brito served as General Planning Chairs, overseeing planning and the conference’s smooth operation. The event brought together participants working across five conference tracks: K-12 Education, Undergraduate Education, Graduate Education, Continuing Education, and Faculty.
Academic Programme
The academic programme combined keynote speeches, workshops, poster presentations, and opportunities for discussion across engineering and computing education. Three invited keynote speakers presented their work and perspectives on education, artificial intelligence, and lifelong learning:
- Mufti Mahmud, King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals, presented Beyond the Prompt: Human-Centred AI Literacy for Engineering and Computing Education in the LLM Era.
- Karen Colbert presented The Algorithm Wasn’t Built for Us: AI Is Learning… But Are We?
- Michael K. J. Milligan, ABET, presented Engineering Education for Lifelong Learning: The Power of Collaboration and Innovation.
Nine workshops took place as part of the academic programme. Among them were “From Unit Diagnosis to Action: Using OLEET, DANCE, and TRIPLE-CaTED to Improve Engineering Teaching“, “Developmental Team Formation Using Personality-Based Clustering in Computing and Engineering Education“, “Unleashing Quantitative and Qualitative Data Analysis Through Generative AI” and “Pedagogies of Care: From Policing to Amplifying Student Voices to Develop Academic Integrity” and “Designing Agentic Student Success Systems for Context-Aware Performance Prediction“.
The conference also featured more than 32 poster presentations, allowing researchers and practitioners to share their work and engage with colleagues from different institutions and countries.
The closing ceremony recognised outstanding contributions to engineering and computing education, research, teaching, and the IEEE Education Society.
Helen Margaret Lester Plants Award
Ibukun Osunbunmi and Stephanie Cutler received the Helen Margaret Lester Plants Award for Artificial Intelligence for Research and Teaching: Adopting Emerging Technologies in Engineering Education.
Benjamin Dasher Award
Gaurangi Raul, Yu-Zheng Lin, Karan Patel, Bono Po-Jen Shih, Matthew W. Redondo, Banafsheh Saber Latibari, Jesus Pacheco, Soheil Salehi, and Pratik Satam received the Benjamin Dasher Award for RAG-PRISM: A Personalized, Rapid, and Immersive Skill Mastery Framework with Adaptive Retrieval-Augmented Tutoring.
IEEE Education Society Awards
- 2026 IEEE Education Society Chapter Achievement Award: Dr. Kai Pan Mark.
- IEEE Education Society 2026 Distinguished Member Award: Habib M. Kammoun.
- IEEE Education Society 2026 Mac Van Valkenburg Early Career Teaching Award: Lucas Buccafusca.
- IEEE Education Society Student Travel Award: Kyle Shanachilubwa, Selina Reinhard, Gabriel Bonetti Rafols, and Madislav Ilin.
Social Programme
The welcome reception took place on the Bougainvillea Terrace at the Coral Beach Hotel & Resort. Participants enjoyed canapés and local drinks while overlooking the Mediterranean Sea, providing a relaxed setting for conversations at the start of the conference. October offered a particularly appealing time to experience Paphos. The intense summer heat begins to ease, while the city generally retains warm days and pleasant conditions for outdoor activities.
Participants delved into the city’s history, visiting the Archaeological Museum, which houses artefacts dating from the Epipalaeolithic period through the 4th century AD. The conference dinner took place at Alliathon Resort, where attendees enjoyed traditional food, drinks, and music. The evening continued with dancing, giving participants another opportunity to socialise and celebrate the conference together.
Next Location
The next Frontiers in Education Conference will take place in Dallas, Texas, USA. Dallas offers a distinctive setting for an October conference for two practical reasons. Dallas has a strong connection to the technology and innovation economy of North Texas, giving attendees opportunities to explore the wider professional environment surrounding engineering, computing, and applied technology.
Acknowledgments
The Technical Program Committee comprised Claudio Brito, Michelle Jarvie-Eggart, and Gloria Kim, with junior members Krista Kecskemety, Rosa Vasconcelos, and Olga Patricia Vazquez-Villegas. The conference’s award committees included:
- Benjamin J. Dasher Best Paper Award Committee: Luis Amaral, Erika Cervantes, and Jean Mohammadi-Aragh.
- Helen Margaret Lester Plants Best Special Session Award Committee: Todd Fernandez, Jerry Gannod, and Roberto Portillo.
- New Faculty Fellows Award Committee: Melany Ciampi, Saira Anwar, and Assad Iqbal.
