Paphos Half-Day Excursion

PaphosAbout

An excursion to Paphos provides conference participants with the opportunity to explore one of Cyprus’s most significant historical sites in a clear and well-organized manner. Paphos is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, known for its remarkably preserved Roman mosaics, ancient theatre, and archaeological park by the sea. The guided visit helps participants understand the island’s long history, from ancient Greek and Roman times to early Christianity, while enjoying coastal scenery and key landmarks in a single trip. It’s an informative and rewarding experience that shows a different side of Cyprus beyond the conference venue.

ProgrammeExcursion

We will first head off for the ‘Tombs of the Kings’. This area contains underground tombs said to rest noble men, carved out of solid rock, which date back to the 3rd century B.C and cause a sense of mystery and secrecy.

Continuing the trip to pure history, we will then walk to the nearby ‘Roman Villas of Dionysos’, where the guests will see the ploughshare which accidentally uncovered part of a mosaic pavement in 1962. This was the beginning of a series of excavations that finally revealed a total of 22 rooms, 14 of them with mosaic floors representing scenes of hunting and Greek mythology of exquisite beauty and perfect geometry. Just next to the Paphos Archeological Park, where the mosaics are located, we will meet Paphos Fort. This was originally built to protect the harbor but was dismantled by the Venetians in 1570. During the 16th century, the Ottomans restored and rebuilt the fort after they captured the island

Participation fee is inclusive of:

Tombs of the Kings

Despite the name, these tombs were not for kings but for high-ranking officials. Carved directly into solid rock, they date back to the Hellenistic and Roman periods. Visitors can walk among large underground tombs with columns and open courtyards, giving a clear picture of ancient burial practices and daily beliefs.

Roman Villas of Dionysos

These Roman villas are famous for their well-preserved mosaic floors, which show scenes from Greek mythology, especially stories about Dionysos, the god of wine. Visitors can see detailed artwork that once decorated wealthy Roman homes and learn how people lived during Roman times in Cyprus.

Paphos Fort

Paphos Fort stands at the edge of the harbour and has protected the port for centuries. Originally built in Byzantine times and later rebuilt by the Ottomans, it was used as a fortress, prison, and storage space. Today, visitors can walk around the fort and enjoy views of the harbour and coastline.
