Katerina Koutsovoulou holds a BSc in Biology and a PhD in Seed Ecophysiology, supplemented by postdoctoral research on the conservation of tree genetic resources and the study of species distribution changes based on the historic Morea scientific expedition (1828–1833). With over 20 years of extensive experience in EU and nationally funded projects, Katerina has specialized in the research and implementation of in situ and ex situ conservation strategies for plant species.

The past years, Katerina has been working at the Green Fund while maintaining ongoing collaborations with the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, alongside occasional collaborations with institutions such as the Mediterranean Agronomic Institute of Chania and the Institute of Mediterranean Forest Ecosystems.

Currently, she is actively engaged in various conservation initiatives, including:

  • Monitoring, reporting, and protecting species and habitats of community interest under the Habitats and Birds Directives,
  • Evaluating and overseeing biodiversity projects funded by the European Structural and Investment Funds (ESIF) and national programs,
  • Monitoring and assessing the conservation status of flora populations in Crete and Rhodes, and
  • Implementing an ex situ conservation project in collaboration with the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew.

Katerina’s work demonstrates a strong commitment to biodiversity conservation and the sustainable management of genetic resources.
