Lina Mtwana Nordlund, PhD, is an Associate Professor in Environmental Science at Uppsala University, Sweden, and an internationally recognised marine scientist with expertise in seagrass. She is a strong global voice on human–nature interactions and the future of coastal systems, specialising in inter- and transdisciplinary research across natural and social sciences. Using coastal ecosystems as model systems, she explores social–ecological dynamics to inform evidence-based decision-making.
She leads multiple international projects advancing co-created solutions that connect science, policy, and society. Her work emphasises futures thinking, collaboration, and inclusive research, integrating local and global perspectives into management strategies.
As the global lead for the seagrass Essential Ocean Variable (EOV) under GOOS (IOC-UNESCO), Lina contributes to a sustained, fit-for-purpose global ocean observing system. She is also involved in several global initiatives, including the World Ocean Assessment and the UN Ocean Decade Vision 2030. Her highly cited publications and leadership in international collaborations underscore her impact at the science–policy interface, supporting resilient and sustainable coastal ecosystems worldwide.
