Dr. Florin Timofte
Scientific Director of NIMRD “Grigore Antipa”
Florin Timofte is a marine biologist at the National Institute for Marine Research and Development “Grigore Antipa” in Constanța. His work focuses on advancing applied research in the fields of the blue economy, marine ecosystem protection, and the sustainable use of marine resources. He contributes to strengthening the institute’s role in generating scientific knowledge and practical solutions that support environmental sustainability, innovation, and the responsible development of coastal and marine sectors.
A major area of his activity is the development of microalgae and macroalgae aquaculture, with applications in the bioeconomy, agriculture, green biotechnology, and the creation of new value chains for coastal communities. He is also involved in promoting the transfer and adaptation of marine algae cultivation technologies to support ecological restoration initiatives along the Romanian Black Sea coast, particularly the recovery of underwater macroalgal forests and seagrass meadows that have been severely degraded in recent years as a result of human pressures.
Through this work, Florin Timofte contributes to consolidating the position of NIMRD “Grigore Antipa” as a strategic institution in marine research, innovation, and sustainable development in the Black Sea region.
