Dr. Anna Demetriou

Anna Demetriou holds a BA in History and Archaeology from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (Greece) and an MA in the Management of Archaeological Sites from University College London (United Kingdom). She was awarded her PhD by the University of Cyprus in 2019, with research focusing on ancient shipwrecks as spaces of interaction and engagement in contemporary society. She subsequently conducted postdoctoral research through the SHARE project (“Mapping SHipwreck ARchaeologies in the Eastern Mediterranean: the sites, the people, and the environment”), examining the historical development of shipwreck archaeology in the wider Eastern Mediterranean.

With over fifteen years of experience in maritime archaeology in Cyprus, Anna has worked across research, heritage management, and public engagement. She has led and contributed to underwater surveys and excavations, museum exhibitions, public archaeology initiatives, and archaeological ethnographic research.

Since joining CMMI in 2022, she coordinates research and innovation activities related to the study, monitoring, and preservation of maritime antiquities, including the impacts of climate change. Her work promotes interdisciplinary collaboration and sustainable approaches to the management and public engagement of maritime heritage.
