The 9th European Association for Forensic Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, Psychology and other involved Professions (EFCAP) Congress successfully took place from 27-29 May 2026 in Limassol, Cyprus, bringing together more than 150 academics, researchers, students, clinicians, and practitioners from 18 countries, including the Netherlands, New Zealand, Switzerland, and many other parts of Europe and beyond.
Held under the theme “Bridging Science, Justice, and Care: Towards a Resilient Future for Young People”, the congress served as a major international platform for discussing emerging research, innovative interventions, policy developments, and practical challenges within the field of Forensic Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, Psychology, and related professions.
Hosted by the Department of Psychology, University of Cyprus, the Cyprus Psychologists Association (CYPSA), and the European Association for Forensic Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, Psychology and other involved Professions (EFCAP Europe), the congress was held under the auspices of the Deputy Ministry of Social Welfare of the Republic of Cyprus.
The event took place at the prestigious St Raphael Resort & Marina, a luxury seaside destination renowned for its modern conference facilities, exceptional hospitality, and unique location overlooking the Mediterranean Sea.
The conference was chaired by Professor Kostas Fanti of the University of Cyprus, whose leadership and commitment ensured the successful planning and smooth operation of the congress throughout its three-day programme. Reflecting on the event, Professor Fanti stated during the opening ceremony: “We are grateful to all participants, speakers, students, researchers, and practitioners who travelled to Cyprus and contributed to the success of EFCAP 2026. The exchange of knowledge, experience, and perspectives during these days highlights the importance of international collaboration in addressing the complex challenges faced by vulnerable young people. Conferences such as EFCAP play a vital role in advancing research, informing practice, and strengthening the bridge between science, justice, and care.”
An important milestone for the association also took place during the congress, with Cyril Boonmann being elected as the new President of EFCAP Europe.
Programme
The congress featured distinguished keynote speakers from leading international institutions.
- Professor Terrie Moffitt from Duke University, King’s College London, and the University of Oslo presented “History of an Idea 1993-2026: Adolescence-Limited and Life-Course Persistent Antisocial Behaviour”, revisiting one of the most influential frameworks in developmental criminology.
- Professor Kostas Fanti of the University of Cyprus explored innovative approaches through his keynote “Technology-Supported Interventions Targeting Aggression and Antisocial Behavior.”
- Henrik Andershed and Olivier F. Colins delivered “From Youth Psychopathy to Callous-Unemotional Traits… and Back?”, examining evolving perspectives on youth psychopathy and developmental pathways.
- Professor Chijs van Nieuwenhuizen of Tilburg University presented “Good Men Do What Bad Men Dream”, encouraging discussion around human behavior, morality, and forensic psychology.
Beyond the keynote sessions, the congress hosted two specialized workshops. The FORNEUROTECH workshop introduced participants to a sustainable knowledge network that unites scientists and practitioners in advancing forensic neurobiology and technology through interdisciplinary collaboration and evidence-based implementation of neurotechnological interventions.
The second workshop focused on The Implementation of Multisystemic Therapy and Multisystemic Therapy for Child Abuse and Neglect in a European Context, providing practical insights into evidence-based family interventions and implementation challenges across different healthcare and social welfare systems.
Poster sessions featuring 27 scientific presentations were held during the coffee breaks, creating opportunities for discussion, networking, and collaboration among established researchers and early-career scholars.
A significant highlight of the programme was the GIRAF International Debate on pressing issues in secure youth care. GIRAF addresses the complex challenges surrounding young people who pose the highest risk of violence to and from others, bringing together international experts to discuss policy, ethics, treatment approaches, and future directions in secure care environments.
The congress was organized with the support of a dedicated Local Organizing Committee consisting of Kostas Fanti, Giorgos Georgiou, Chara A. Demetriou, Evita Katsimicha, Maria Petridou, Ioannis Mavrommatis, and Melina Nicole Kyranides. The Scientific Committee included Panicos Stavrinides, Militsa Nikiforou, Ioannis Mavrommatis, Heidi Hales, Chijs van Nieuwenhuizen, Daniel Rijo, Dirk van West, Lorena Maneiro Boo, and Laura López-Romero, whose expertise significantly enhanced the programme’s academic quality.
Alongside the scientific programme, participants enjoyed a series of social and cultural activities designed to strengthen professional networks.
The Welcome Reception took place in the gardens of the venue, where delegates enjoyed local drinks, canapés, and informal discussions while overlooking the Mediterranean coastline. The warm weather of May and the vibrant atmosphere of Limassol provided the ideal setting for welcoming participants from around the world.
Lots of visitors also had the opportunity to experience the city’s unique character beyond the conference dates. Located near the historic Amathus Ruins, one of Cyprus’ most significant ancient kingdoms, the conference offered attendees a chance to connect not only with colleagues but also with the rich cultural heritage of the island.
Participants joined licensed guides for a tour through Limassol Marina and the historic old town, discovering the city’s blend of history, architecture, culture, and coastal beauty. The Conference Dinner took place at a traditional tavern in Armenochori village, where participants enjoyed authentic Cypriot cuisine, local drinks, live music, and panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. The evening quickly evolved from casual conversations to shared laughter, dancing, and celebration, creating memorable experiences and strengthening friendships across countries, disciplines, and institutions.
