The 21st European Mediterranean & Middle Eastern Conference on Information Systems (EMCIS) was held from September 2-3, 2024, in Athens, Greece.
This highly respected annual research event is a central meeting point for the Information Systems (IS) discipline, drawing both regional and global perspectives. The theme of this year’s conference was “Connecting Minds and Technology to Shape our Digital Future” emphasizing the critical role of technology in shaping the future. With 20 diverse tracks, such as “Artificial Intelligence”, “High-Performance Computing”, “Metaverse”, and “Digital Marketing”, EMCIS 2024 explored the evolving landscape of digital innovation. In addition, the conference proceedings will be published in the prestigious Springer Lecture Notes in Business Information Processing series, further cementing its academic significance.
The event was hosted by the American College of Greece, one of the most respected educational institutions in Greece, known for its commitment to academic excellence and international collaboration. The conference chairs, Dr. Nikolaos Bakas and Dr. George Kokosalakis from the American College of Greece, alongside Dr. Khalid Almarri from the British University in Dubai, ensured the seamless operation of the event.
This year’s EMCIS welcomed 60 participants, including researchers, academics, and students, from 16 countries, such as Cyprus, Finland, Germany, Greece, Norway, and the UAE.
A highlight of EMCIS 2024 was the keynote speech by Costantino Roselli, a bestselling author, serial entrepreneur, and renowned futurist. His talk, titled “From Citizens to Netizens – How We Build Future Sustainable Societies Using the Avatar Economy,” captivated the audience with his visionary insights into how digital transformation and the evolving avatar economy will shape future societies. Roselli’s speech provided both practical insights and futuristic perspectives on how technology can lead to more sustainable and interconnected global communities.
Beyond the rich academic discussions, participants also had the chance to explore the city of Athens, a place where history meets modernity. Known for its ancient monuments, such as the Acropolis and Parthenon, as well as its thriving contemporary art scene, Athens offered attendees a unique cultural experience. A special conference dinner on Monday allowed participants to network while enjoying the city’s renowned cuisine and atmosphere.
The conference was supported by The American College of Greece and the Dubai Blockchain Center, two institutions that are at the forefront of educational and technological advancements.
