Econometrics
The 2025 European Winter Meeting of the Econometric Society brought leading voices in econometrics and applied economics to the heart of Nicosia, Cyprus, from December 7 to 9, 2025. More than 340 academics, researchers, students, and practitioners from 35 countries gathered to exchange knowledge, explore new research, and strengthen international collaboration in the field. The event took place at the modern University of Cyprus new campus and was hosted by its Department of Economics under the auspices of the Econometric Society, a global scientific organization advancing economic theory and quantitative methods worldwide.
Prof. Dimitrios Xefteris, Local Host Organizer, welcomed participants and highlighted the significance of the gathering, stating, “This meeting shows how forward-looking our field is. It is a privilege to bring this European meeting together here in Cyprus.”
Prof. Pedro Mira chaired the Scientific Program Committee, and the event’s success was supported by the full team of chairs and co-chairs listed on the conference committee page, whose collective effort shaped a rich and diverse academic program.
Programme
The meeting featured an outstanding lineup of keynote speakers whose work reflects some of the most influential and timely areas in econometrics today. Stephane Bonhomme from the University of Chicago presented “Estimation based on Orthogonal Moments,” discussing advances in robust structural estimation. Myrto Kalouptsidi from Harvard University delivered a compelling talk on “Transportation, Infrastructure and Trade Disruptions,” examining global supply chains and their vulnerabilities. Camille Landais from the London School of Economics offered a forward-looking address titled “A Gender Equal World Around the Corner,” highlighting the intersection of labor markets and social policy. Gianluca Benigno from the University of Lausanne presented the ECB Lecture, contributing essential insights into macroeconomics and monetary policy.
The Best Paper Awards recognized exceptional contributions by emerging scholars. Lavinia Kinne and Virginia Sondergeld from DIW Berlin received a Best Paper Award for their study “Meet my family: women in leadership and gender stereotypes in the media.” A second Best Paper Award was presented to Geraud Desazars from Università Bocconi for his paper “Growing through capital,” reflecting his innovative approach to growth dynamics.
Participants also enjoyed a range of academic sessions and discussions throughout the three days, all held in a stimulating environment designed to foster collaboration.
Beyond the lecture rooms, the social program offered a memorable cultural experience. The welcome reception at the UCY foyer allowed attendees to reconnect over canapés and local drinks, set against the unique calm of Nicosia in December, when the city blends festive atmosphere with soft winter light. A guided visit to the Cyprus Archaeological Museum introduced participants to artifacts from the island’s millennia-old history. This was followed by a tour through Paphos Gate, Eleftherias Square, and Laiki Geitonia, showcasing the layers of culture, architecture, and daily life in the old city. The Conference Dinner at the Royal Hall concluded the evening with traditional Cypriot cuisine, music, and a lively atmosphere where participants danced and celebrated the close of a productive meeting.
