
Dr. Pantelis Katharios
Founder, Aquatic Biologicals and Researcher at Hellenic Centre for Marine Research, Greece
Pantelis Katharios is a Research Director at the Institute of Marine Biology, Biotechnology, and Aquaculture of the Hellenic Centre for Marine Research, with longstanding expertise in fish health, aquaculture pathology, and disease control. His work focuses on the diagnosis, study, and management of diseases in aquaculture, with particular emphasis on bacteriophage therapy as an alternative to antibiotics and on the development of autogenous vaccines and other health products for the aquaculture industry. He has led and contributed to more than 20 national and European research projects and has played a key role in advancing research infrastructure and innovation in marine biotechnology.
He is the founder of Aquatic Biologicals, the first spin-off company of HCMR, which develops vaccines for disease prevention in aquaculture and was recognized nationally as Spin-off of the Year in 2022. Over the course of his career, he has published extensively in international scientific journals, contributed book chapters and technical manuals, and participated in major scientific missions, including the 59th Chilean Antarctic Expedition. He holds a BSc in Aquaculture and Fisheries from the Technological Educational Institute of Messolonghi, an MSc in Aquatic Pathobiology from the University of Stirling, and a PhD in Biology from the University of Patras.
