Prof. Fraser Sturt
Director of Southampton Marine & Maritime Institute (SMMI)
Fraser is the Director of the University of Southampton’s Marine & Maritime Institute, its foci for interdisciplinary research and knowledge exchange. He is a professor of maritime archaeology, with a focus on complex data capture and integration. This expertise has seen him work on challenges across the globe; from environmental impact assessment of offshore infrastructure, through sea-level modeling to excavation of submerged prehistoric sites. His current research includes work on identification of potentially polluting wrecks using remotely operated and autonomous underwater vehicles, and the use of artificial intelligence for detection of anomalies in remotely sensed data. In addition, he directs the UKRI AHRC funded Coastal and Inland Waters Heritage Science Facility; one the of the UK’s national hubs for heritage science expertise. He has had close links to the Cyprus Marine & Maritime Institute since its foundation and is a firm believer in the transformative power of collaborative research at an international scale.
