ECSA 2025

19th European Conference on Software Architecture

Limassol

September 2025

Software Architecture

From September 15 to 19, 2025, the international software architecture community gathered in the coastal city of Limassol for the 19th European Conference on Software Architecture (ECSA 2025). Hosted at the five-star St. Raphael Resort and Marina, the event brought together 90+ academics, researchers, industry experts, and students from 25 countries to share cutting-edge knowledge, foster collaboration, and discuss the future of software architecture. The event was co-located with the 37th International Conference on Testing Software and Systems.

The success of ECSA 2025 was made possible thanks to the dedication of the organizing team. General Chairs Vasilios Andrikopoulos (University of Groningen) and Cesare Pautasso (USI Lugano), together with Local Chair George Angelos Papadopoulos (University of Cyprus), ensured the smooth operation of the event. Program Committee Chairs Nour Ali (Brunel University London) and Jacopo Soldani (University of Pisa), along with all other committee members, were instrumental in shaping a high-quality program.

Reflecting on the conference, the organizers noted: “ECSA 2025 has once again demonstrated the vitality of the software architecture community. The diversity of contributions and perspectives shows how our field continues to adapt and innovate in response to technological change.”

The Program

The conference featured keynote addresses by internationally renowned experts. Eoin Woods, independent consultant and former CTO of Endava, delivered a provocative talk titled “Software Architecture Doesn’t Matter Any More – Does It?”, reflecting on architecture’s role in today’s rapidly evolving software landscape. Elisabetta Di Nitto (Politecnico di Milano) discussed the Development of Infrastructure as Code and its approaches, trends, and challenges. At the same time, Catia Trubiani (Gran Sasso Science Institute) explored methods for quantifying the software performance of architectural decisions.

The academic program spanned a wide range of topics, including microservice architectures, software qualities, embedded systems, and AI-assisted architecture. Dedicated sessions on Large Language Models (LLMs) in software architecture highlighted how generative AI is reshaping design and decision-making. The program also included the Doctoral Symposium, Tools & Demos sessions, and the MIP Awards, fostering exchange across all career stages.

The 19th European Conference on Software Architecture also hosted a series of specialized workshops, such as the International Workshop on Context-Aware, Autonomous and Smart Architectures (CASA), the Workshop on Architecting Digital Twins of Organizations (ArchDTO), the AI-Assisted Software Architecting (AISA) workshop, and the Agility with Microservices Programming (AMP) workshop. Tutorials on Software Architecture in the Age of Agentic AI provided participants with hands-on insights into applying AI to architectural practices.

Delegates also enjoyed a vibrant social program. A welcome reception at the St. Raphael Resort set the stage for networking, while the official conference dinner combined a city tour of Limassol with a traditional Cypriot meze feast, accompanied by music and local drinks. Optional excursions allowed participants to discover the island’s rich history, including visits to Paphos, Nicosia, and traditional villages. The beauty of Limassol’s coastline, with its blend of modern vibrancy and ancient heritage, created an inspiring backdrop for academic exchange and collaboration.

Acknowledgments

The conference highlighted outstanding contributions through a series of awards. The Best Student Paper Award was presented to Alexander Bakhtin, Matteo Esposito, Valentina Lenarduzzi, and Davide Taibi for their work “Centrality Change Proneness: an Early Indicator of Microservice Architectural Degradation.” The Best Paper Award went to Andres Diaz Pace, Catia Trubiani, and David Garlan for their study “Data-driven Understanding of Design Decisions in Pattern-based Microservices Architectures.”

Finally, the Best Reviewer Award recognized Filipe Correia and Ilias Gerostathopoulos for their outstanding contributions in maintaining the quality of the review process and supporting the scientific rigor of the conference.

The Department of Computer Science at the University of Cyprus served as the host organizer. The department is recognized internationally for its excellence in teaching and research, particularly in software engineering, data management, networks, and AI.

EasyConferences supported the conference with its Online Registration System and its  Conference Coordination Services, which kept attendees updated and connected throughout the event.

Looking Ahead

As the 19th European Conference on Software Architecture concluded successfully in Cyprus, attention now turns to the next edition of the conference, which will be held in Italy. Known for its dynamic innovation ecosystem and stunning lakeside scenery, Bolzano offers an ideal location for continuing the dialogue on the evolving role of software architecture in research and practice.
