The theme of the SMC-18 Summer School is "Computational Ethnomusicology." The SMC-18 Summer School will take place from June 30th to July 3rd at the Cyprus University of Technology.
The summer school is suitable for students who are enrolled in MA/MSc/PhD programs in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Music Technology, and Musicology assuming that they have basic experience with programming. Interested applicants will learn about state-of-the-art techniques in music information retrieval and how they can be applied to better understand the musics of the world under the guidance o leading experts in the field.
Topics covered include: machine learning, generation of rhythms, cultural significance of rhythms, deep learning, probabilistic modelling, rhythm and beat information extraction, and pitch/tuning/melody analysis.

George Tzanetakis is an Associate Professor in the Department of Computer Science with cross-listed appointments in ECE and Music at the University of Victoria, Canada. He is the Canada Research Chair (Tier II) in the Computer Analysis of Audio and Music and received the Craigdarroch research award in artistic expression at the University of Victoria in 2012.
